23 Hot Scandinavian Summer Houses for Seasonal Retreats

Last updated on December 19, 2025 · How we make our designs

Check out our Scandinavian summer house designs that are all about spending the summer in the woods by the lake.

We’ve gathered a series of Scandinavian summer houses that are all about that in‑between life. Half on the deck, half on the sofa, always facing the lake, forest, or sea.

Every design here started with the landscape first, then we wrapped it with glass, timber, and a lot of doors you’ll probably forget to close.

You’ll see familiar cottage shapes. Gable roofs, red cladding, small porches nudged into lighter, cleaner versions of themselves, alongside low glass pavilions that almost disappear into the trees.

Pay attention to how decks turn into outdoor living rooms, how sliding doors erase thresholds, and how simple forms quietly frame some very not‑simple views.

Some cabins hover on piers, some settle into rock, some just sit there looking smug by the water, but they all share one idea. Summer should feel easy.

This lakeside retreat leans into a calm, almost barefoot aesthetic with its white vertical siding and low metal roof that quietly frames the landscape behind it. The generous timber deck stretches along the façade, turning the whole front of the house into one big outdoor room where coffee clearly tastes better.

Sliding glass doors anchor the design, blurring the line between the cozy interior and the water just beyond, while the simple front door and slim window keep the entry clean and unfussy. Soft outdoor furniture, oversized planters, and that little round dining set are all intentionally low and compact, so the view and the relaxed weekend vibe stay firmly in charge.

This long, low cabin stretches across the rocks like it just decided to lean back and enjoy the view. Charred vertical cladding and a crisp metal roof keep the architecture calm and pared down, almost like it’s whispering instead of shouting for attention.

We pulled a generous boardwalk-style deck all along the façade so every room can slide open to the outdoors without you dodging boulders. Slim railings, big glass panels, and that pale chimney stack break up the dark volume just enough, giving clear sightlines to the forest while still feeling snug when the weather gets a bit too “Nordic.”

This small waterfront retreat leans into classic cottage lines, then softens them with pale timber cladding, crisp white trim, and a steep gable that feels both familiar and fresh. We wrapped it with wide French doors so the living space can spill straight onto the deck, because no one wants to choose between the sofa and the sunset.

The generous, terraced decking steps down to a simple dock, turning the shoreline into one long outdoor room for lounging, dining, and launching kayaks without any fuss. Chunky stone edging, a quiet neutral palette, and a single potted shrub keep the whole place feeling effortless, almost like it just wandered down from the forest and decided to stay by the water.

This place leans into that long, low profile so it almost disappears into the tree line, then quietly shows off with a full wall of glass facing the deck. The slim white frames and vertical cladding keep everything neat and calm, while the black metal roof adds just enough edge so it doesn’t feel too sweet.

We added a generous stepped terrace that feels like an outdoor living room, so you wander out barefoot without thinking about where inside ends and outside starts. Even the swinging curtain has a job to do here, softening the big openings and hinting that the whole house is meant for lazy afternoons and coffee refills rather than anything overly serious.

This design leans into simple shapes and clean siding, then warms everything up with natural timber frames around those big sliding doors. The black metal roof gives a crisp edge, almost like eyeliner for the cottage, and makes the low profile feel calm instead of fussy.

Out front, the wide timber deck works like an extra living room, just one that happens to overlook the water and a very smug outdoor dining set. The stepping-stone path and loose grasses are kept intentionally casual, so the place feels quietly curated but never precious—you can still wander in with sandy feet and not feel you’re breaking the rules.

This little retreat leans into the classic Scandinavian red facade, then freshens it up with crisp white framing and those big French doors that practically invite weekends to stay longer. The steep gable keeps the form familiar and cozy, while the tall glazing makes the whole front feel open and easy-going, not at all shy about its views.

Out front, the staggered deck levels gently step down over the rocky slope, turning what could be awkward terrain into a series of relaxed outdoor rooms. Clay pots, simple furniture, and that unfussy umbrella were all chosen to feel almost improvised, like the place grew over a few happy summers instead of being over-planned on a screen.

Charcoal Garden Patio Cottage

This little retreat leans into a bold charcoal-and-white palette, so the crisp doors and shutters pop like pages in a sketchbook. We wrapped it with a low timber deck to keep outdoor dining super casual, as if the table might just wander closer to the trees any day now.

French doors stretch almost wall to wall, inspired by old greenhouse fronts where inside and outside never really argue about who’s in charge. The simple furniture, umbrella, and potted greenery are kept intentionally light and movable, so the space can flip from quiet coffee corner to full-on midsummer feast without anyone breaking a sweat.

This little retreat leans into that classic “let’s just live outside” feeling with a long wall of French doors spilling onto a generous timber deck. The low, simple roofline and pale vertical siding keep the whole place calm and almost shy, like it doesn’t want to upstage the trees behind it.

We shaped the deck as an easy extension of the living space, so you can shuffle from sofa to lounge chair without thinking about thresholds or shoes. Metal roofing, clean trim, and those lantern-style fixtures add just enough polish to feel intentional, while still letting the house stay relaxed and quietly practical.

This little cottage leans into classic Swedish farmhouse vibes, with vertical red cladding framed by bright white trim that makes the windows pop like picture frames. The raised stone foundation gives it a solid, almost storybook base, while the compact porch invites you to kick off your boots and forget what time it is.

We shaped the rooflines to keep things simple but charming, stacking a modest entry gable beneath the main roof so the entrance feels welcoming without trying too hard. Generous windows on all sides pull in views of the trees and meadow, turning the small footprint into a place that feels surprisingly spacious and very much stitched into the landscape.

Pinecrest Floating Glass Box Retreat

This cabin leans into a clean, low-slung shape, almost hovering above the rocky ground on simple concrete piers so the terrain can stay wild and a bit stubborn. Huge floor-to-ceiling glass panels wrap the front corner, giving that easy “sit on the sofa and still feel outdoors” kind of vibe we kept chasing during design.

We wrapped the whole shell in vertical pale timber, letting the grain run in one direction so the box feels calm and almost quietly confident. The deep roof overhang frames the deck as an outdoor room, giving shelter from sudden summer showers and making that slim black window framing pop just enough without shouting about it.

Cliffside Graphite Boardwalk Retreat

This cabin leans into its charcoal facade and long deck like it’s stretching out to claim the rocky hillside as its own living room. Our studio pulled the gabled center volume forward, then slid the wings back, so the whole place quietly frames views of the forest while making the outdoor terrace feel like the main lounge.

The broad wraparound boardwalk isn’t just for show; it lifts you above the uneven stone, guiding you smoothly from arrival to dining table to sun chair without a heroic hiking effort. Generous floor‑to‑ceiling windows punch through the dark cladding, softening the strong lines and making every room feel plugged straight into the trees and mossy outcrops outside.

This long, low cabin stretches across the clearing like a quiet underline, with pale vertical cladding that makes the boxy shape feel soft instead of severe. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass opens the living spaces to the terrace, so the sofa basically gets front-row seats to the landscape.

The whole structure is lifted lightly on concrete piers, keeping it above the rocky ground and giving the deck that floating-boardwalk vibe. Deep overhangs carve out a sheltered outdoor lounge at one end, turning a simple rectangle into a series of cozy corners where you can chase sun, shade, or just an excuse to not go back inside.

Rockshore Black Gable Retreat

This design leans into that quiet rugged coastline vibe, with a long black-clad volume perched confidently on the rocks and a generous deck stretching the full length. The tall concrete chimney anchors the whole place, giving the simple gable shape a bold little exclamation mark.

We pulled huge sliding glass doors across the façade so the interior feels almost stitched to the landscape, no matter where you’re standing. The low platform deck sits just above the boulders, creating a casual outdoor room where a simple wood table and chairs turn the rocky terrain into an easygoing hangout spot.

This compact summer house leans into simple lines and clean surfaces, with white vertical cladding wrapped by warm natural wood trims and a broad timber deck that feels like a second living room. The low black metal roof keeps the profile calm and grounded, letting the long façade of glass and wood quietly steal the show.

At the corner, the fully glazed sunroom pops out like a cozy lookout, giving wide open views from the sofa while still feeling snug and protected from the wind. We framed the sliding doors and windows in slim profiles on purpose, so the focus stays on the landscape and you can wander from inside to the deck with coffee in hand and socks still on.

The dark vertical timber shell frames a surprisingly soft outdoor living room, where the low deck, loungers and oversized umbrella feel like they’re just waiting for a lazy afternoon nap. We designed the wide folding glass doors so the whole front can slide open, turning the interior into one big extension of the terrace when the weather behaves.

Inside, the simple gable form hides a bright, calm space where pale wood tones and greenery quietly balance the bold exterior. Slim side windows stretch almost to the floor, giving views in two directions and making the compact footprint feel much larger than it looks from the lawn.

This long, low cabin rests lightly on the rocks, with a raised deck that almost floats above the rugged ground so you can wander from kitchen to cliff edge in about six casual steps. The deep black cladding was inspired by forest shadows, letting the house blend into the pines behind it instead of shouting for attention.

At the center, the tall glass gable opens the dining area straight onto the terrace, turning meals into a front-row show of sky and landscape, whatever the weather is up to. Slim framed windows, a metal roof, and clean-lined chimneys keep the whole place crisp and modern, while the simple rectangle layout makes it surprisingly easy to live in and, honestly, even easier to admire.

This little cabin leans into contrast, with inky horizontal siding framed by crisp white windows and French doors that practically wave you outside. The broad timber deck stretches out like an extra living room, turning the forest edge into a very casual “backyard.”

Climbing vines soften the straight lines of the facade, so the place feels like it’s slowly being claimed by the greenery in the best possible way. A low daybed, chunky tree-stump planter, and simple outdoor table keep the furnishings relaxed and unfussy, giving the whole retreat that “stay in your slippers all day” sort of vibe.

This cabin stretches out over the rock like it just decided to hover there for a bit, with a pale timber deck that almost feels like an outdoor living room. The tall glass gable pulls the trees and distant water straight into the main space, so you pretty much get front-row seats to the landscape from the sofa.

Dark vertical cladding wraps the whole structure, letting it visually sink into the pines while the slim black frames and glass balustrades keep everything looking clean and unfussy. The house is lifted on discreet steel posts, protecting the fragile ground and giving those big windows a better view, which is kind of the whole point of sneaking away to a place like this.

The cabin leans into a simple gabled form, wrapped in pale horizontal cladding that makes it feel like it grew right out of the rocks. Those large sliding glass panels turn the whole front into a quiet lookout, so the living space just spills straight onto the deck and toward the water.

We kept the roof thin and dark so it visually “floats” over the lighter walls, while the low platform deck ties everything neatly to the shoreline without getting shouty. A slim side window and a flush entry door keep the facade calm and tidy, giving you privacy where you want it and wide-open views where you actually sit and daydream.

This cabin leans into a simple, stretched-out rectangle so the long façade can show off that wall of glass and the wraparound deck, almost like it’s sunbathing in the clearing. The pale vertical timber cladding was inspired by the birch trunks behind it, giving the whole place this easy, “of course I belong here” kind of vibe.

Inside, the big sliding doors and picture window are sized to frame the trees like one huge landscape painting, but they also keep the footprint efficient and easy to warm up after a cool night. The low metal roof and slightly raised platform mean less fuss with snow, rain, and uneven ground, while the built-in steps and bench keep the whole thing feeling more like a relaxed outdoor room than a formal house.

This cabin stretches low across the rocks, then pops up into that big glass gable like it’s proudly showing off the view. Dark vertical cladding keeps it grounded in the landscape, while the pale timber deck feels almost like an oversized boardwalk for bare feet and lazy chairs.

We carved the stepped terrace to follow the uneven stone, so nothing feels forced or over-shaped, just comfortably settled in. Huge panes frame the forest like a changing wall mural, and the simple rooflines keep everything calm, modern and a little bit “we could actually live here” instead of museum-piece fancy.

This little cottage leans into a calm, soft-gray palette, with vertical timber cladding that feels both fresh and quietly familiar. We paired it with a warm wood deck that wraps around the house, so stepping outside barefoot for morning coffee is basically mandatory.

The simple gable roof and crisp white trims are a nod to traditional Scandinavian farm buildings, but scaled down into a relaxed summer hideout that doesn’t show off, it just works. Big, divided-light windows frame the landscape like moving paintings, while the low steps and potted greenery make the whole place feel welcoming before you’ve even touched the door handle.

This coastal cabin borrows its calm character from weathered driftwood, wrapping the exterior in soft gray boards that feel like they’ve grown out of the rocks. Large sliding glass doors line the sea-facing side, so you can sit at the table and still feel like you’ve snagged front-row seats to the water.

We pushed the deck out in generous tiers, creating easy spots for lounging, dining, or just pretending you’re a lighthouse keeper on break. The low built-in bench and simple steps keep everything feeling relaxed and unfussy, guiding you from gravel path to ocean edge in one smooth, quiet move.
