Every home needs a deep cleaning, especially after a long, cold, and dark winter. Spring is almost here, and nature is waking up from its slumber. It’s probably safe to say that your house has been closed for months, and there are areas both outside and on the inside that need your urgent attention.

But where should you start? The answer’s not that simple, because every home is different. However, in this article, we’ll give you seven great tips on house maintenance after winter. Read on if you want to learn more about the areas of your property that could use some spring cleaning.

Take Care of Your Garage

Your garage is a versatile place. It acts as a parking spot for your car and provides you with storage space when you need it. You probably use it quite often; on average, your garage door opens 1,500 times each year.

After winter is over, you should inspect your garage and organize what’s inside. More importantly, you should check the door and see if it works properly. It may turn out that you’ll need urgent garage door opener repairs, garage door spring replacement, or maybe you’ll have to buy a new garage door. If it shows signs of wear and tear, do not ignore it if you want to keep your home, car, RV, and other belongings secure.

Clean Out the Gutters

Winter storms can damage your gutters, not to mention fallen leaves, dirt, and debris that might have accumulated in there over time. Clean it all out and look for any signs of damage. If you notice parts that are loose or leaking, replace them as soon as possible. Leave them unattended, and you risk causing more profound water damage.

The works around your gutters and downspouts will require you to get on the ladder. If you’re not comfortable with it, consider hiring someone to do them for you. Safety should always come first, especially if you’re working above the ground.

Inspect Your Roofing

Snowstorms and strong winds can wreak havoc on the exterior of your house, and the damage can be quite extensive. If you fail to notice any signs of wear and tear until later during the year, the interior of your house can get damaged as well. As such, you should inspect one of the most important parts of your home – the roofing

If you notice any missing or damaged shingles, hire professional local roofers to do further inspections and repairs. Take care of the issue as soon as possible; otherwise, you might have to break the bank to cover the costs of all the work that need to be done!

Examine Your Basement

Not every home has a basement, but if yours does, you can’t skip this step. Water damage can cause serious safety problems in your home, and the roof is not the only entry point for water – it can also get inside through your basement.

Small floodings are not that dangerous when handled immediately. However, if you neglect the issue for too long, you risk severe foundation damage, which might render your house unlivable.

The best solutions to secure your basement include installing a new drainage system, using vacuums and basement pumps for small puddles, or sealing your basement walls with waterproof masonry paints. Additionally, you should fill in all the gaps and cracks and insulate the walls to reduce indoor humidity.

Deep-Clean Your House

As the long winter months slowly turn into a memory, it’s time for the spring cleaning of your house. Open the windows and let out stale air but make sure to do it before the pollen season gets really bad! Go through every room in your house and clean the rugs, curtains, and furniture, mop the floors, and get rid of dust and cobwebs.

Additionally, you can go through the items in your house. Clean out the refrigerator, examine your clothing, put the equipment you no longer use in your garage or attic, or even better – organize a garage sale or give usable items away. Get ready to welcome spring with a clean, fresh house!

Wash the Driveway, Walls, and Deck

Just like it’s important to clean your home from the inside, you can’t forget about keeping it clean on the outside! Winter and its sometimes unpredictable weather might have left an unappealing layer of dirt and grime on the outside of your home. As such, you should thoroughly wash the driveway, walls, walkways, and deck. You can do it with a garden hose, but we recommend using a pressure washer for the areas that are difficult to reach. Don’t forget to close the doors and windows before you get to work!

If you have a balcony or a top-level deck with another deck or patio directly under, consider using under-deck ceiling panels for your lower-level outdoor spaces. The under-deck ceiling will keep water away from your lower-level space and keep it clean during rainy and snowy days, reducing the work for you and preventing moisture damage.

Take Care of Your Garden

Winter doesn’t encourage people to go outside and engage in gardening works. If you happen to live in an area where snow is a frequent occurrence, you might need to tend to your garden as soon as it thaws.

Your list of tasks may be quite extensive. You may need to clean out broken branches and twigs, trim and prune the shrubs, prep the soil, mow the lawn, and plant your first flowers and veggies. It might take some time to get your garden in order, but when you finally succeed, it will be much more pleasant to sit in when spring comes!

The Takeaway

This list is, by no means, exhaustive, but it touches upon the most important and universal aspects of every home. You can get your home ready for the new season from the interior to the exterior in a variety of different ways, depending on the type of your property.

Sure, it may seem like a lot of work, but after a long winter, almost everything does. However, these tips should give you an overview of what needs to be done in and outside of your home and guide you through the process.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Choose the area you want to focus on first, and start from there. On top of that, you might want to make a detailed action plan in order not to feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs to be done. And with a bit of effort and determination, your property will look as good as new for spring!
