19 Breathtaking Modern Cottages You’ll Love

Last updated on May 1, 2026 · How we make our designs

See why these modern cottages are worth a look, from grass roofs and black cladding to windows set for fjords and surf without turning the rooms into fishbowls.

These cottages are our idea of modern done properly, quiet, sharp, and a little stubborn in the best way. We took cues from turf houses, fishing sheds, old farm buildings, and the raw mix of lava, moss, black sand, and sea, because out here a house really should know when to calm down.

As you go, notice the grass roofs, the dark cladding, and the way so many forms bend, split, or tuck into the ground. We kept the glazing generous too, but pointed with care toward fjords, rivers, cliffs, and surf, so the views feel huge without turning the rooms into fishbowls.

What makes these designs special is how naturally they sit in places that are, honestly, a bit wild. Pay attention to the sheltered entries, boardwalk approaches, stone plinths, and quiet courtyards.

Moss Roof Lava Cabin

This cabin keeps a low quiet profile with black vertical cladding, a simple gabled form, and a grass roof that makes it feel half architecture, half hillside. We shaped it to borrow from old turf houses and the raw lava plain around it, because in a place this big, showing off would be a bit embarrassing.

The concrete base lifts the structure clear of the rough ground, while the broad glass corner and wraparound deck open the living spaces to the mountains without making the cottage feel exposed. Every detail matters here, from the dark exterior that settles into the landscape to the planted roof that softens the silhouette and helps the house sit tight against the weather.

Fjord Rim Blackwood Hideaway

This compact fjord retreat keeps its shape crisp and unfussy, with black timber cladding, a low green roof, and tall corner glazing that helps it settle into the slope instead of sitting awkwardly on top. We love how the plan folds into an L around the entry, giving the front door a little shelter in a place where winter clearly has strong opinions.

The design feels inspired by old Nordic hillside huts, then edited into something cleaner and more serene, with pale wood at the entrance softening the exterior just enough. Big windows pull the water and mountains right into the rooms, and the whole cottage looks so neatly composed it almost feels smug about it.

Braided River Gable Retreat

Two simple gabled volumes come together around a glazed entry link, giving the cottage a neat village silhouette without feeling fussy. The weathered timber cladding and cool metal roofs help it settle into the tundra quietly, which is smart when the landscape is already showing off.

We shaped the plan as a pair of compact forms so the main living area can open wide to the river while the private rooms stay tucked back and cozy. That split layout borrows from old Icelandic farm buildings, and the small detached shed is a practical little bonus because not every beautiful object should also hold muddy boots.

Stormline Dune Glass Cottage

The steep roof and dark cladding borrow from old Nordic utility huts, then trim the idea down into something cleaner and a touch moodier. Set against the black sand, the cottage feels tucked into the dunes instead of dropped on top of them, which is a neat little move.

That full glazed gable faces the surf so the main room stays locked on the horizon, while the concrete chimney and ribbed metal roof give the form a sturdy backbone for rough weather. We also love the narrow boardwalk, it keeps boots out of the mud and makes arriving feel like a tiny expedition without all the heroic nonsense.

Riverbend Turf Pavilion

This cottage is shaped as two low bars split by a glass entry, which gives the whole plan a calm little pause in the middle. One volume is wrapped in black cladding, the other in pale concrete, and that contrast keeps the silhouette crisp even when the roofs try their best to disappear into the hillside.

The planted roofs are the clever bit, blending the house into the valley while adding texture that shifts with the seasons and weather. We took cues from old turf dwellings and rugged volcanic terrain, then softened everything with a curved stone path and tidy garden beds, because remote living should feel grounded and a touch cozy, not overly serious.

Mistbound Headland Cabin

This long black retreat sits on the cliff like a quiet lookout, with a slim rectangular form that follows the edge instead of fighting it. Full height glazing runs along the water side, so the whole cabin stays connected to the sea and the rooms feel open without getting fussy.

We shaped the entry, stairs, and viewing platform as clean concrete cuts in the rock, which gives the design a grounded feel on a pretty wild site. The flat roof and dark cladding were inspired by the stark coastal landscape, and honestly, anything more decorative here would feel a bit overdressed.

Stillwater Elbow House

The plan bends into a neat L, tucking the entry into a sheltered notch and opening the living corner straight toward the water. That move keeps the cottage low and calm on the site, and it gives the glazed corner a front row seat without making the whole place feel like a fishbowl.

Black vertical cladding sharpens the silhouette, while the planted roof lets the top blur back into the mossy ground, which is a pretty clever trick if you ask me. Broad concrete terraces extend the rooms outdoors and settle the cottage on uneven land with zero fuss, so the whole thing feels anchored, simple, and quietly bold.

Fumarole Fold Cottage

This cottage tucks itself into the ground with a steep turf roof and dark concrete wings, so it feels more borrowed from the hillside than dropped onto it. The sharp glazed front gives the whole thing a clean little wink, while the planted roof softens the profile and helps the house sit quietly in that raw volcanic setting.

A narrow timber walkway stretches over the wet ground and turns the approach into part of the design, which is smart because muddy boots are basically guaranteed out here. We shaped the chimney as a sculptural tower in stone and weathered metal, inspired by Iceland’s geothermal vents, so even the smallest piece feels tied to the place.

Snowsaddle Split Gable Cabin

The plan splits into two steep gabled volumes with a narrow glazed link between them, which gives the cottage a calm little center without making a big show of it. Dark vertical timber cladding and crisp metal roofs keep the profile clean against the snow, and it looks quietly confident, almost smug.

You can feel the nod to old Nordic farm buildings in the simple forms, but the detailing is much tighter and more refined. Deep window openings, a sheltered porch, and tucked wood storage make the design practical in rough weather, because frozen firewood is nobody’s idea of luxury.

Ocean Verge Sodfold House

This cottage is shaped as a cluster of sharp gables that feels tucked into the coast instead of parked on it. We drew from old turf houses and fishing sheds so the black cladding stays quiet while the planted roof sort of disappears into the mossy ground.

The stepped plan creates a sheltered deck and pulls big glass toward the sea which gives the living spaces a wide horizon without turning the whole place into a fishbowl. Tall narrow side windows keep the walls crisp and the profile slim and that matters out here where the weather can get a bit bossy.

Basalt Halo Lodge

The plan curls into a near perfect ring, creating a protected courtyard at the center while the grass roof helps the cottage settle into the shoreline instead of shouting for attention. We paired dark vertical cladding with thick stone walls so it feels almost grown from the basalt, which is pretty clever when the sea gets moody.

A narrow bridge makes the approach feel calm and a little ceremonial, then the curved facade opens into long low windows facing the water. The form nods to old turf shelters and coastal ruins, but it is refined into something crisp and contemporary, like a Viking hideaway that discovered good detailing.

Fallside Skew Roof Cottage

This cottage stretches low along the bank with a single sloping roof that seems to lean into the valley, keeping the profile quiet while the waterfall gets to be the show off. Black cladding sharpens the silhouette against all that green, and the warm timber around the glazing stops it from feeling too serious.

We shaped it around the bend of the stream, with broad glass facing the water and a simple concrete entry that gives the approach a grounded, almost shelter like feel. The stepping stones, planted edges, and little detached volume make the whole setup feel purposeful and a bit playful, like a very stylish camp that grew up.

Ash Plain Pinwheel House

The plan fans out in a pinwheel of low wings, which helps the cottage settle into the broken lava instead of landing there like a lost spaceship. Dark vertical cladding, a crisp metal roof, and a pale concrete plinth give it a clean edge against all that rugged stone.

A walled courtyard carves out a calm pocket beside the house, complete with a round fire feature that feels both practical and a little bit smug. Big recessed windows and the stepping stone path make the whole design feel tucked in, protected, and very sure of itself.

Bloomroof Inlet Bothy

A crisp black shell and a simple gable keep the cottage low and calm against the steep shoreline, while the planted roof lets it slip right into the meadow like it was trying not to bother anyone. We shaped the front with generous glazing and a small timber deck so the water stays close all day, even when the weather gets a bit moody.

The turf top is more than a pretty trick, it softens the outline and helps the cabin feel rooted to the site instead of parked on it. Rough stone edging and a gravel approach keep the composition grounded, and that contrast with the dark cladding gives the whole place a quiet confidence, which is rare for a house wearing flowers on its head.

It wraps itself into a crisp square with an open sky court at the center, a smart move borrowed from sheltered farm compounds and sharpened into something very current. Out here where the wind likes to show off, that inward focus keeps the rooms calmer and gives every glazed edge a welcome bit of privacy.

Dark timber cladding, cast concrete walls, and a folded metal roof keep the whole form low and grounded against the lava field, while the little bridge arrival adds a quiet flourish. Deep openings and covered decks carve out places to sit without arguing with the weather, which feels like a very Icelandic kind of luxury really.

Reed Arc Hearth Nook

Set low at the lake edge, this compact gabled retreat pairs black vertical cladding with rugged stone walls so it feels nestled into the volcanic ground, not plopped on top of it. The long roof plane and slim skylight stretch the silhouette toward the mountains, and the full height glazing makes the living room feel like the best lookout in the valley, lucky us.

We shaped the approach as a soft boardwalk curve that slows you down a bit, because rushing to a place like this would be kinda missing the point. A sheltered gravel court with a fire bowl tucks against one side of the plan, giving the home a calm windbreak and an outdoor room that stays inviting even when Iceland gets a little moody.

Sea Stack Turf Triptych

Three dark volumes sit low in the grass with planted roofs, framing a slim concrete chimney like a coastal marker. We shaped it as a triptych, inspired by the sea stacks offshore, so the cottage feels tucked into the bluff instead of dropped there from space.

Glazed links between the wings keep the plan open while giving each zone its own quiet corner for sleeping, cooking, and gathering. The curving gravel path softens the crisp geometry, and those sod roofs help the whole place blend into the hillside when the weather gets a little pushy.

Gorge Crown Arrow House

Perched right at the canyon lip, this long timber cottage stretches forward like it is pointing at the river below. The sharp roofline and boxed out windows were inspired by the cut of the cliffs, so the whole place feels carved into the edge rather than simply parked there.

A low concrete base steadies the house against the rough ground, while the narrow footprint keeps every main room aimed at the view, which is frankly a bit of a show off. The stair and lookout platform turn the approach into part of the design too, giving the cottage a quiet sense of adventure without getting overly heroic about it.

Northbay Ink Gable

The design keeps things wonderfully simple, with a steep black gable set against the snow like a crisp ink mark by the water. A smaller matching outbuilding adds a nice bit of order and utility, so the whole place feels calm, compact, and ready for weather that never really takes a day off.

That tall glazed end wall pulls the sea view right into the main room, while the little porch and low timber deck help the cottage sit easy on the exposed ground. We took cues from old Icelandic farm houses and shoreline sheds, then pared everything back, because cozy can still look very sharp.
