20 Charming Two Story Cottages with Storybook Appeal

Last updated on December 23, 2025 · How we make our designs

Check out our two-story cottage designs where we combine storybook beauty, cozy details, and smart vertical living.

Two-story cottages can be a bit like people. Some are shy and tucked into the trees, some happily face the street with a big grin of a porch, and some just really want you to notice their balcony.

In this collection we played with everything from New England farmhouse lines and coastal shingles to timber cabins and Tudor stonefronts, all sized to feel cozy instead of imposing.

You’ll see how each front gable, dormer, and chimney isn’t just there for looks, it quietly shapes how the house feels as you walk up the path and step onto the porch.

Pay attention to the doors and entries too. Dutch doors, deep porches, tiny vestibules, and those “is that a secret lookout?” little roof decks all change how you arrive home.

We also had a lot of fun tying each cottage to its setting. Lakeside decks, garden courtyards, hillside walkouts, and porches that basically double as outdoor living rooms.

This cottage leans into classic farmhouse charm with its steep front gable, crisp white board‑and‑batten siding, and that bold red door that basically waves hello from the curb. Window boxes packed with flowers soften the geometry, while the small front porch with simple posts gives just enough shade for a pair of chairs and an iced tea situation.

We borrowed cues from traditional New England homes, then cleaned up the lines so it feels fresh instead of fussy. The entry arbor, tidy walkway, and layered landscaping create a gentle “arrival” moment, and that narrow, tall facade makes the house feel delightfully cozy without eating up the lot.

This design leans into that classic coastal cottage vibe, with inky shingles setting off crisp white trim and window boxes overflowing with greenery. The centered two-story section gives it a gentle sense of presence without going all “look at me” on the street.

We loved pairing the Dutch door and shutters, because together they make the entry feel a bit like a storybook but still super practical for everyday living. Climbing roses, clipped hedges, and the stone path pull the whole thing into the garden, turning the cottage into a cozy backdrop for morning coffee and maybe the occasional overly long afternoon.

This lakeside cottage leans into a clean A-frame silhouette, wrapped in warm horizontal wood siding that feels casual and unfussy. Tall stacked windows pull views of the water straight into the living spaces, so you basically get front-row seats to every sunset without leaving the sofa.

We gave it a generous upper deck and a stone patio tucked below, so mornings can start with coffee up top and drift down to loungers later in the day. Soft gray trim and railings keep the exterior from feeling too “log cabin cosplay,” while the compact entry wing makes the whole place feel welcoming and easy to live in.

Steep intersecting roofs, chunky timber brackets, and that generous stone chimney make the cottage feel like it wandered out of a fairytale and just decided to stay. The shingles are kept light to balance the weight of the stone base, while the deep green doors and shutters tuck it comfortably into the landscape instead of shouting for attention.

We leaned into old‑world charm with the diamond-pane windows and arched entry, details that quietly hint at medieval cottages without going full theme park. The layered gables and sturdy porch frame give the front elevation depth and shelter, guiding guests right to the door and making this small footprint feel surprisingly grand.

This cottage leans into a cozy lake-country vibe with warm timber siding, twin dormers, and a friendly front porch that just begs for a pair of rocking chairs. We wrapped the ground level in stone to ground the house visually and give it a sturdy feel, which also helps the cottage sit comfortably against the rolling landscape.

The deep porch, trimmed with chunky posts and simple railings, is sized for real living—coffee in the morning, muddy boots in the afternoon, and a lazy nap somewhere in between. Generous windows on every side pull in views of the water and fields, while the steep roofline keeps the upper floor roomy enough for actual furniture instead of just sloped-ceiling excuses.

This design leans into classic cabin charm with its cedar-style siding, big covered front porch, and that tall stone chimney anchoring one side like it’s been there forever. The steep metal roof and twin front gables give it a crisp, tailored look that still feels relaxed and welcoming.

Up top, the paired dormer windows pull in natural views and make the second floor feel surprisingly airy, while the little transom window over the door adds a quiet bit of character. Down below, chunky stone porch piers, simple railings, and the straight-shot front walk create an easy, no-fuss arrival that makes you think, yep, this is where the weekend starts.

This design leans into that cozy craftsman look with its stacked gables, mix of shingle and lap siding, and chunky stone porch columns that feel solid but still friendly. The soft sea-green exterior paired with warm wood accents was inspired by lakeside cabins, just cleaned up a bit for everyday neighborhood life.

Out front, the deep sitting porch, wide steps, and big living room windows are all about making it easy to linger outside and keep an eye on who’s dropping by. We tucked the single garage neatly under its own gable, so it feels like part of the house instead of a big box stuck on, and the simple landscaping frames the entry without demanding a full-time gardener.

This design leans into its tall, narrow form with those twin arched windows and a little roof deck on top that feels like a secret lookout. Warm red-brown trim frames the crisp siding, tying the garage door, porch columns, and front entry into one very intentional face to the street.

The front porch tucks neatly beside the single-bay garage, so the house feels welcoming instead of all car, with slim evergreens guiding you to the double doors like polite doormen. Decorative brackets, round accent windows, and shingle textures keep the façade from ever feeling plain, giving the cottage a bit of “storybook meets coastal” personality without going overboard—well, maybe just a tiny bit on purpose.

This cottage leans into a soft coastal palette, with powder-blue board-and-batten siding and teal trim framing every window like a picture. The rooflines tuck in cozily and feels like the house is giving you a hug, especially with that compact front vestibule pulling you gently inside.

We wrapped a belt of vines and red climbing roses around the mid level to blur the edge between house and garden, so it almost looks like the flowers decided to move in. Tall, gridded windows and the twin bay nooks open views in all directions, which makes the small footprint feel generous and lets that brick path lead your eye straight through the heart of the place.

This design leans into that classic farmhouse feel, with a deep front porch that wraps you in railing and columns like a friendly hug. The tall, symmetrical window layout was inspired by traditional New England homes, giving every main room big views out over the lawn and woods.

Up top, the simple gable roof and little arched accent window keep the facade calm and tidy, so it never feels fussy or overdone. The walkout lower level, tucked neatly into the slope, adds a whole extra floor of usable space for a studio, guests, or just a spot to stash all the gear that mysteriously multiplies every season.

This design leans into that cozy-modern vibe, with stacked gables and warm timber brackets giving the front porch a welcoming little hug. We mixed vertical board-and-batten with horizontal lap siding and a stone base, so the cottage feels layered and interesting without trying too hard.

The roomy front porch, solid columns, and generous overhangs aren’t just for looks, they give you a dry spot for packages and a nice pause before stepping inside. A wood-toned garage door, soft neutral paint, and carefully shaped planting beds pull everything together, making the cottage feel settled into the yard like it’s been there for years—in the best way.

This design leans into that coastal farmhouse vibe with its deep blue siding, crisp white trim, and standing seam metal roof that looks good in every season. The double front doors and full-height porch columns make arriving home feel a bit like stepping into a vacation, even if you still have emails to answer.

Up top, the petite balcony and grouped windows bring in views and air while giving the whole front a friendly, almost smiling expression. Stone-based porch columns and the simple walkway anchor the cottage to the landscape, creating a tidy, low-fuss entry that frames the lawn and keeps the focus on relaxed everyday living.

This cottage leans into a relaxed lakeside personality with its stacked porches, stone‑clad lower level, and soft gray shingle siding that feels calm instead of shouty. We tied it all together with clean white trim, deep overhangs, and warm wood accents so it feels inviting from a distance and even better up close.

Upstairs, the covered balcony with ceiling fans is really the “second living room,” giving you a breezy spot to watch the water while pretending to read that book. Down below, wide glass doors blur the line between the indoor gathering space and the gravel terrace, framed by simple landscaping that’s pretty, but not fussy, so weekends are for relaxing and not yard marathons.

This cottage leans into classic log-cabin warmth with clean modern lines, pairing honey-toned timber walls with a sturdy stone base and chimney that feel like they’ve always belonged on this clearing. The deep front porch, complete with simple square posts and wood railings, invites chairs, muddy boots, and long chats that somehow always go past bedtime.

Up top, the twin front dormers break up the roof in a friendly way, giving the second floor cozy window nooks instead of just plain sloped ceilings. We framed the entry with broad stairs, layered plantings, and a solid wood door so arriving home feels intentionally special, but never fussy—more “weekend at the cabin” than “wipe your feet three times.”

This cottage leans into classic farmhouse charm with its trio of crisp front gables and that broad, welcoming porch that almost begs for rocking chairs. We pulled in the soft sage shingles and deeper lap siding to keep it feeling calm and grounded, while the white trim keeps everything looking sharp, not stodgy.

The screened side porch is a quiet little bonus, tucked neatly under the main roofline so it feels like part of the whole rather than an afterthought. Warm wood-framed windows and doors break up the cool exterior colors, adding just enough contrast so the house feels friendly and lived‑in, even before anyone moves in.

This tall, trim cottage leans into a modern farmhouse vibe with its clean gray siding, crisp white trim, and that warm wood front door that basically says “come on in, snacks are ready.” We played up the strong front gable to give the narrow footprint some extra presence, while the smaller porch gable frames the entry so it feels welcoming instead of towering.

Board-and-batten above lap siding keeps the façade interesting without getting fussy, and the simple brown shutters add just enough contrast to keep things from feeling too buttoned-up. Around back, the side porch and fenced yard slide neatly off the main volume, giving you a surprisingly generous outdoor hangout zone that still looks tidy from the street.

This little cottage leans into classic Tudor charm with its steep front gables, dark trim, and creamy stucco walls contrasted by a warm stone façade. The arched wooden entry door and matching carriage-style garage door make the whole front feel welcoming, like it’s already picked out your favorite mug for weekend coffee.

Up top, the centered gable and petite vented dormer give the roofline a playful, storybook profile without getting fussy. Neat flower beds, low shrubs, and a crisp front walk frame the house, softening the strong geometry and making the whole design feel settled, cozy, and honestly just a bit proud of itself.

This design leans into that classic cabin-in-the-woods vibe, but we cleaned it up so it still feels fresh and crisp. The tall metal roof with twin front dormers gives cozy upstairs rooms and helps snow and rain slide right off, which is pretty handy when the weather forgets to be polite.

Down below, the mix of natural wood siding and chunky stone on the porch piers and chimney is inspired by old park lodges, just scaled to a human weekend. The deep front porch, framed with sturdy posts and simple railings, turns into an outdoor living room, so you can sit there with coffee and pretend you chopped all that timber yourself.

This place leans into old farmstead charm with its tall, vertical board-and-batten siding and that crisp metal roof that looks ready for any weather you throw at it. The stacked porches, framed by chunky timber posts, invite you to sit, stare at trees, and absolutely ignore your to‑do list for a while.

We pulled in the wraparound side porch, metal skirting, and simple black railings to keep things practical and low‑maintenance, while still feeling warm and a bit romantic. Planter buckets, barrel accents, and those hanging wreaths soften all the straight lines, turning the whole cottage into the kind of place that feels “lived in” even before the first box is unpacked.

This cottage leans into classic Craftsman charm with its twin front gables, shingle accents, and that generous porch that practically begs for a couple of rocking chairs. We pulled in warm wood railings and copper gutters so the soft gray siding wouldn’t feel too serious, giving it a relaxed, neighborly vibe.

Up top, grouped windows and subtle trim details keep the second story feeling light while still giving plenty of presence from the street. The long driveway, detached garage, and tidy planting beds frame the house just enough, so the structure feels settled on the lot without shouting for attention.
