21 Jaw Dropping Single Story Modern House Exteriors with Wood Accents

Last updated on May 22, 2026 · How we make our designs

We use cedar slats, tucked entries, and clean rooflines turn low modern exteriors from a fancy toaster into a home that actually feels welcoming.

We kept these one story exteriors low, clean, and easygoing, then used wood accents to take the edge off all that crisp modern geometry. A house can get a little too serious in charcoal, white, or concrete, and cedar is very good at talking it down.

The ideas came from all over, really. West Coast modern homes, quiet cabins in the trees, barn shaped rural buildings, alpine lodges, and a bit of desert restraint all show up here, just pared back so the homes feel calm and very liveable.

As you look through them, pay attention to the rooflines, the tucked entries, the courtyard layouts, and the way wood slats, soffits, screens, and pergolas soften the glass and dark cladding. That is where the good stuff is, and where a sleek exterior stops feeling like a fancy toaster and starts feeling like home.

This corner lot design leans into a crisp flat roof profile, charcoal cladding, and warm wood accents that keep the facade from feeling too serious. We took cues from West Coast modern homes, then softened the look with a screened entry volume and a carport that sits quietly off to the side.

The tall front glass opens the house up and gives the entry a clean focal point, while the wood soffits add warmth where modern homes can get a little poker faced. Curved driveway lines and simple planting beds balance all those straight edges, which makes the exterior feel polished, relaxed, and very easy to come home to.

Forest Shed Roof Retreat

We shaped this one like a quiet line through the trees, with a single sloped roof that keeps the profile low and a little bit sly. The warm cedar skin softens the crisp black metal shell, so it feels modern without acting too cool for the woods.

A wall of glass opens the main side to the deck and pulls the forest right up to the living spaces, which is really the whole point out here. The narrow footprint, tucked entry, and simple boardwalk approach keep the house calm and compact, and the fire pit court gives it a nice excuse to stay outside a little longer.

Prairie Courtyard With Cedar Gable

The low sprawling layout borrows from classic farm compounds, with three simple gabled volumes gathering around a gravel courtyard. Crisp white walls and a pale metal roof keep it clean and calm, while the cedar wrapped porch wing adds just enough warmth so it doesn’t feel too proper.

That sheltered center space is the clever bit, giving the house an easy outdoor room that still feels tucked in even with open fields stretching forever. We also love the long rooflines, deep overhangs, and dark framed glazing, which make the whole exterior feel grounded and a little barn inspired in the best way.

Alpine Ledge With Vertical Cedar

This hillside design stretches out with long roof planes, board formed concrete, dark cladding, and a band of warm cedar fins that gives the whole exterior a crisp alpine edge. It borrows a bit from mountain lodges and a bit from modern pavilion design, which is a pretty nice combo if you ask me.

The terraced entry, stone retaining walls, and broad outdoor lounge help the house settle into the slope instead of perching on it awkwardly. Those vertical wood accents also soften the concrete and glass, so the exterior feels refined and grounded, not like a fancy box that wandered into the forest.

Suburban Oasis With Timber Screen

This one keeps a calm low profile from the street, using crisp white stucco and slim vertical wood screens to soften the boxy flat roof forms. We shaped the entry like a warm pocket in the facade, so the approach feels more inviting and a lot less garage first.

Behind that clean street face, the plan opens to a private courtyard with a narrow pool, full height glass, and a timber deck that turns the center of the house into the best seat in town. The design borrows from desert modern homes and pared back Japanese details, which is why it feels tidy, relaxed, and just fancy enough without getting weird about it.

Raven Creek Solar Cottage

The plan breaks into two slim wings with matching shed roofs, then ties them together with a glazed link that keeps the whole composition low and calm in the trees. Deep charcoal cladding sharpens the silhouette, and the cedar infill adds just enough warmth so it does not feel like a very stylish toaster dropped in the forest.

The little bridge, stone paths, and circular fire pit terrace make the landscape part of the architecture instead of an afterthought. Solar panels sit neatly on one roof plane, which suits the clean geometry and gives the house that quiet off grid confidence people always love.

Meadowline Clerestory Ranch

Set low against open farmland, this home stretches out in two clean wings under slim metal roofs and a ribbon of clerestory glass that keeps the profile crisp. We borrowed a little from rural barn forms and a little from courtyard planning, then warmed it up with vertical wood panels so it feels polished but not precious.

The entry is tucked into a timber lined recess, while the garden side opens wide to a terrace, lap pool, and pergola that makes outdoor dinners look suspiciously easy. That balance of sheltered edges and long open views is what gives the design its calm, and yeah, it helps the whole place sit in the landscape without looking bossy.

Glacier Fold Courtyard House

This hillside residence wraps a quiet courtyard form into the landscape, pairing smooth concrete walls with warm vertical timber so the modern lines feel welcoming instead of too polished. The low black roof planes stretch outward and frame big expanses of glass, which helps the house sit calmly against those huge mountains.

We borrowed a bit from alpine lodge design and stripped it back, then used stone borders, native planting, and broad terraces to tie everything neatly to the site. The covered entry and sheltered patio are tucked in just right, which is pretty smart when the weather gets moody and the outdoor table still wants its moment.

Corner Lot House With Blonde Cladding

Set on a corner lot, this low modern home pairs a long dark roof with crisp white walls and a warm wood wrapped garage that gives the front a clean, tailored feel. The angled roofline pulls your eye toward the courtyard, which makes the whole place feel longer and calmer than the average suburban setup.

We shaped the pool and covered patio as a private outdoor room, so the big glass openings turn everyday living inward instead of toward the street, which is honestly a better deal. Soft planting, stepping stone paths, and vertical wood boards keep it polished but easygoing, like a modern house that actually knows how to relax.

Pine Hollow Courtyard Modern

Set into a wooded slope, this low modern home wraps an intimate stone courtyard with dark cladding, warm wood trim, and a broad roof that feels calm instead of flashy. The layout turns the outdoor room into the heart of the plan, which is smart on a site like this because the trees are lovely but also a bit nosy.

Big glass walls open the living spaces to the deck, while the concrete retaining walls and tucked under garage help the house sit neatly on the grade without looking fussy. We pulled inspiration from quiet woodland cabins and crisp midcentury lines, then softened it with cedar details and native plantings so it feels polished but still happy to get pine needles on its shoes.

Orchard Twin Gable Homestead

Two barnlike wings with dark metal roofs frame a calm gravel court, giving the house a clean rural silhouette that feels right at home in the meadow. We took cues from old agricultural buildings, then pared everything back so it feels crisp and current, not costume party farmhouse.

The glazed entry link keeps the center open and airy, while the timber pergola and slatted wood screen warm up the pale exterior and add privacy where it actually matters. A narrow reflecting pool and loose orchard planting help the whole place settle into the landscape, and honestly, the house looks pretty pleased with itself.

High Meadow Mono Pitch Hideaway

Set into the rocky hillside, this one story retreat pairs inky vertical cladding with a warm cedar core, so the entry feels tucked in and welcoming right away. The single slope roof follows the land instead of fighting it, which gives the whole place a calm low profile and a bit of mountain savvy too.

Tall windows and a small corner deck open the living area to the valley, while the concrete base steadies the house on the uneven site without making it look stiff. We shaped it like a modern backcountry cabin, clean and compact, because out here the view is already showing off enough for everyone.

Walnut Breezeway Ranch

The plan stretches low and wide, then breaks at the center into a breezeway that gives the front elevation a little suspense. Warm wood wraps the entry and rear terrace, softening the charcoal brick and taupe stucco so the whole place feels crisp but not fussy.

Out back, a timber pergola anchors the patio and pool, turning a suburban yard into something quietly resort like, minus the overpriced snacks. The broad hipped roof keeps the profile calm and grounded, while deep overhangs and black framed windows make each wing feel clean and really well resolved.

Fern Grove Living Roof Cabin

Set low among the birches this compact retreat pairs warm vertical cedar with a pale concrete core and two planted roof planes. The living roof helps the house settle into the site so well it almost feels like the forest claimed it first.

Big corner glass and a broad deck open the main rooms to the trees while the recessed firewood niche adds that quiet cabin charm. We leaned into a clean boxy form because it keeps the silhouette crisp and lets the garden and mossy ground cover be a little show off.

Vineyard Fold Olive Court

Set low against the vines, this home uses a crisp white shell and warm wood panels to keep the whole composition calm and grounded. The folded plan wraps a private courtyard with a little pool, which is a pretty smart move when you want shelter without feeling boxed in.

We pulled cues from wine country compounds and pared them back to something cleaner, flatter, and a bit more refined. The perimeter wall, gravel forecourt, and clipped lawn make the entry feel controlled, while the olive trees soften it so it does not get too serious for its own good.

Aspen Switchback Modern

This mountain home stretches low across the meadow with a sharp folded roof, dark cladding, and warm wood tucked under the eaves. We shaped it to feel fast and calm at the same time, like a ski lodge that decided to get a little more polished.

Concrete walls anchor the entry and frame the terrace, while vertical timber fins soften the glassy front and add a touch of privacy. The long reflecting pool and stone edged planting make the whole approach feel relaxed and just a little fancy, but not the kind of fancy that makes you whisper.

Ink Roof Garden Enclave

The low folded roofline gives this home a crisp tucked in profile, while the black standing seam metal adds a sharp graphic edge against the white walls and warm cedar wrapped volumes. We shaped the plan around a sheltered inner garden so the glassy corner feels private instead of exposed, which is nice because nobody wants the living room on full neighborhood display.

The wood clad garage and entry porch soften the frontage and keep the long facade from feeling flat or too stiff. Out back, the pergola and deck carry that same language into the yard, so the whole place feels connected and calm, kind of like a ranch house that got a very good tailor.

Black Spruce Boardwalk Bungalow

Set deep in the pines, this low cross shaped home keeps a calm profile with black cladding, a pale roof, and warm timber wrapped around the entry like a neat little gift box. The layout feels tucked in and open at the same time, which was very much inspired by the winding drive, the trees, and that creek sneaking along the edge.

Big glazed corners and a broad wood deck pull the living spaces outward, so the house can enjoy the site without turning into some overcaffeinated treehouse. The boardwalk and stone path slow your approach in a good way, and those simple moves make the whole place feel grounded, relaxed, and easy to live in.

Pasture Pinwheel House

Set low in the fields, the house uses a folded roofline and a walled court to create privacy without losing that big open landscape feeling. We wrapped the entry in cedar so the arrival feels warm and clear, and the pale exterior stays crisp instead of reading a little too plain.

Black framed glass opens the main rooms toward the courtyard, while the long one story wings keep the whole composition grounded and easygoing. The gravel drive and tidy planting beds give it a refined farmstead mood, which is a fancy way of saying it looks sharp without being fussy.

Sage Basin Courtyard Pavilion

This low slung home wraps around a sheltered courtyard, using warm vertical cedar and pale concrete walls to settle neatly into the sagebrush hillside. The long roof planes stay calm and horizontal, which keeps the house grounded against those huge mountains, because the view already has plenty of ego.

Deep overhangs, a slatted entry screen, and broad black framed windows give the exterior a crisp edge while keeping outdoor living close at hand. We opened the plan toward the pool terrace and tucked quieter rooms around the inner court, so it feels airy and private at the same time, which is a pretty nice trick.

Maple Court Poolside Modern

The low profile roof and crisp white walls give this home a calm tailored look, while the cedar wrapped garage and entry bring in just enough warmth. We shaped it to feel polished from the street without getting stiff about it, because modern can relax a little too.

Out back, a long covered terrace stretches toward the lap pool and matching cabana, turning a suburban lot into a quiet little resort. Dark brick at the base grounds the whole composition, and the stepping path with clipped hedges keeps the approach neat in that very satisfying shoes off kind of way.
