17 Modern Single Story Houses That Feel Satisfying

Last updated on January 7, 2026 · How we make our designs

Check out our modern single story house designs that turn low profile layouts into character-filled homes.

Single story homes get called “simple” a lot, but we like how they quietly stretch out and show their personality at eye level.

In this collection we played with bold colors, calm cubes, low roofs, courtyards, terraces and long glassy fronts so each house feels like its own little character, not just another box on a street.

We pulled inspiration from lakeside cabins, tropical villas, tidy city blocks and even a few old sunrooms and cottages we grew up admiring.

You will see that in the stone towers, wrapped timber corners, framed gables, floating roofs and those big windows that act a bit like friendly eyes facing the garden.

As you move through the designs, watch how entries are framed, how planting softens all the geometry and how small details like fins, screens and arches quietly change the mood. If you catch yourself picturing morning coffee on one of those porches or terraces, that is exactly the point.

This home leans into a bold black exterior that makes the pale stone tower and warm wood door really pop. The low sloped rooflines keep everything calm and grounded, like the house is just chilling into the landscape.

We played with big vertical windows beside the stone core so the front feels open yet solid at the same time. Clean concrete steps and the curved driveway guide you in, while the neat planting beds and rock feature soften the strong geometry and keep the whole place from feeling too serious.

The broad roofline and tall black-framed windows give the house a calm, low profile that just kind of settles into the lawn. We played with big openings to pull the dining area right out toward the yard so dinners feel a bit like a picnic, minus the ants.

Warm cedar siding wraps one wing while smooth white panels and a dark stone accent wall balance the other side, making the whole place feel both cozy and crisp. Clean concrete steps float through the landscaping, guiding you from driveway to porch in a way that feels easy and just a little bit fancy without trying too hard.

This design leans into that relaxed lakeside vibe, with stacked dark stone giving the front entry a grounded, almost sheltering feel. We wrapped it with warm horizontal timber and slim black framing so the whole place feels modern without trying too hard.

Huge panes of glass open the living spaces to the water views, which honestly do most of the bragging for the house. The flat rooflines step up in layers to sneak in clerestory windows, bringing in soft sky views while keeping the silhouette clean and low.

The twin roof wings lean out like they are quietly stretching, giving the villa a playful asymmetry that still feels calm and ordered. Big sliding glass doors open straight from living spaces to the front terrace, so morning coffee is basically a few barefoot steps away.

We wrapped the center in slim vertical wood screens, which create privacy without shutting out views and also tie the two wings together like a warm handshake. The raised plinth, crisp white walls and teal banding keep the whole place feeling light and clean while lush planting softens the edges and nudges the house into the surrounding garden.

This compact home leans into clean geometry, with that crisp white frame wrapping a warm timber entry that feels like a friendly handshake. We pulled the carport into the overall shape so the parked car looks like it belongs to the architecture, not just the driveway.

Vertical metal screens on the right hint at privacy while still letting views slip through, which makes the front corner feel calm but not closed off. The layered steps, slim path strips and the round water feature soften all the straight lines and bring a quiet garden vibe that keeps the modern look from feeling too serious.

This home plays with crisp geometry, using that big white portico frame to pull the entry and terrace together into one calm gesture. The dark wall panels and floor to ceiling glass keep everything looking sharp and quietly confident, like it knows it looks good but doesn’t brag.

We wrapped the front in warm vertical wood so the house feels a bit softer and more relaxed, especially under the covered outdoor lounge. Slim overhangs with recessed lighting, clean slab edges, and simple landscaping keep maintenance low while still giving the place a very deliberate, tailored feel for everyday living.

This design stretches out like a calm, glassy ribbon, giving every room a front row seat to the garden. We pulled the roofline long and thin so it feels like it is quietly hovering, which makes the whole place look lighter and more relaxed.

Full height sliding panels blur the line between inside lounge and outside sunbeds, so you can wander out in your socks and pretend it was always part of the plan. The clean concrete terrace, white stone strip, and warm timber deck keep the palette simple and tidy, which lets the greenery do the showing off.

This home plays with clean geometry and a little bit of drama, stacking simple white volumes against dark stone wings so it feels crisp without getting cold. The tall ribbon windows pull your eye up and quietly suggest that the interiors are bright and airy, even if you are just passing on the driveway.

We framed the stone panels and the entry in bold white bands, which makes the front feel almost like a gallery wall and helps the warm timber door stand out as the star of the show. A low planted base softens the edges, so the design still feels friendly and relaxed, not like it is auditioning to be a museum.

The design plays with stacked geometric frames that make the home feel both sculpted and surprisingly welcoming. Soft cream walls, warm wood cladding and that deep timber door were chosen to feel a bit like a modern townhouse that secretly wants to be a cottage.

Horizontal ledges shade the tall windows and create little visual shelves that break up the facade in a calm way. The compact front garden tucks in at each step and corner so the house feels anchored to its plot, almost like it grew there on purpose.

This design leans into clean geometry where the stacked flat roofs and long horizontal bands make the whole place feel calm and quietly confident. The white walls are softened with warm timber wraps that slide around the corners, so the house never feels too serious or cold.

At the street, the wood framed entry portal feels like a little gateway moment and sets the tone before you even step inside. Slim metal slats on the gate keep things secure while still letting you peek through, and the simple planting along the drive keeps the focus on those broad windows and crisp lines.

This design pairs a crisp white gabled cottage with a bold charcoal side wing, so it feels both familiar and quietly confident. The warm timber doors and window frames were inspired by traditional homes in the region and keep the whole place from looking too serious for its own good.

We framed the entry with a small porch, chunky columns, and simple steps that make arriving feel calm and easy. Clean tiled paving, low greenery along the dark wall, and those neat vertical windows all work together to guide your eye and make the house feel organized and welcoming without trying too hard.

This design leans into a calm, resort feel with its wide timber steps leading to a deep covered entry that feels almost like a front porch lounge. The mix of smooth render, stacked stone and rich wood keeps things relaxed but still pretty sharp, so it does not drift into boring suburbia.

The curved corner window was inspired by classic sunrooms and helps the living space feel open to the garden, without the need to actually step outside in bad weather. Layered planters and low native landscaping frame the house in a simple way that also makes maintenance easier, which is everyone’s secret design wish even if they do not admit it.

This home leans into a playful mix of classical trim and relaxed tropical vibes, with crisp white walls popping against the lush palms behind it. The strong central axis, framed by those chunky columns and warm wooden double doors, gives it a kind of mini mansion feel without the ego.

We used the blue tiled gable roofs to cool the look visually and to echo clear skies, while the dormer and slim vents keep the roofline interesting instead of boxy. The driveway pattern quietly guides you toward the entry, and the generous front windows and planters soften all that symmetry so it feels welcoming rather than stiff.

This home leans into a simple gable form, then dresses it up with a fresh green roof that pops against the sky. We loved pairing that with the tall narrow windows and warm brown panels so the front feels a bit taller and prouder than a typical single story place.

Up close, the stone cladding around the entry gives a grounded feel and quietly protects the busiest face of the house. The paved walk and low planter boxes guide you in like a gentle runway, while the compact porch keeps the arrival space practical and easy to keep tidy, which every real household secretly appreciates.

This design plays with simple boxy forms that gently step forward and back, so the house feels calm but never boring. Warm timber panels wrap the side wings and door, giving the clean white walls a cozy, almost resort-like feel that makes you think slippers instead of shoes.

The front veranda tucks under a deep overhang with vertical slats that filter views from the garden, so you can lounge outside and still feel a bit hidden from the world. A grid of stone pavers set in grass leads straight to the entry and quietly nudges guests along, and yes, it also keeps your feet dry when you forget where you left the umbrella.

This house plays with contrast using deep charcoal brick against warm stone to make the entry feel bold and welcoming at the same time. The single sloping roof leans forward a bit, almost like the house is nodding hello when you pull into the drive.

Long vertical windows frame views of the trees and give the front a clean modern rhythm without feeling stiff or cold. The glass garage door lightens the wide façade and keeps the whole place feeling open, as if the living spaces just want to spill out to the yard on a slow Sunday.

This design plays with simple shapes, letting the angled roof and crisp white volume nudge your eye up from the street. We paired warm vertical wood with clean stucco so it feels inviting without trying too hard to look fancy.

Floor to ceiling glass at the entry and living space keeps the front transparent enough to feel connected, yet framed by deep overhangs for comfort and privacy. The stepped concrete walk, layered plantings, and low garden wall guide you in gently, so the whole place feels calm before you even reach the door.
