20 Ultra Modern Single Story Houses That Make Sense

Last updated on May 21, 2026 · How we make our designs

Our ultra modern single story houses use rooflines, glass, gardens, and even the path to the front door to make low living feel sharp, calm, and surprisingly full of presence.

These ultra modern single story homes show what happens when a house stops trying to tower over the land and just settles in. We pulled ideas from deserts, dunes, forests, lakes, vineyards, and mountain cabins, then pared them into long rooflines, crisp planes, and calm spaces that feel current without trying too hard.

As you look through them, notice the deep overhangs, the big panes of glass, the courtyards, pools, and planted edges that keep each home tied to its setting. The entries matter too, from stepping pads to boardwalks and stone paths, because first impressions are nice and nobody wants a front door with no charm.

Some are warm and coastal, some a little rugged, some almost resort easy, but they all show how a low profile can still have plenty of presence. Keep an eye on the small contrasts, timber against concrete, dark cladding against greenery, sharp lines softened by gardens, because that is where these homes get really good.

Desert Edge Glass Pavilion

This house keeps a long low profile with a razor thin roof, board formed concrete, warm timber slats, and big black framed glass that feels crisp but not cold. We shaped it from the desert itself, with the horizontal lines borrowing from the mountains so the whole place settles into the site instead of puffing its chest out.

The floating entry pads and slim reflecting pool make the approach feel calm and intentional, while the gravel garden and cacti keep the palette clean and very desert, obviously. Deep overhangs and full height glazing soften the boundary between inside and out, which matters in a home like this because nobody wants a great view treated like an afterthought.

Dune Verge Retreat

This coastal home leans into the dunes with a low sweeping roof, quiet stone walls, and broad panes of glass that keep the sea close at hand. We shaped it to feel sheltered from the wind but still open to the view, which is kind of the beach house trick everyone wants.

The black framed pergola extends the living area onto a pale timber terrace, while the stone path slips through native grasses so the approach feels easy and unforced. Warm wood under the eaves softens the crisp exterior, and that contrast matters because modern homes can get a bit too serious if you let them.

Set low among firs, this charcoal clad home tucks itself into the clearing with a planted roof that feels borrowed from the forest floor. Wide glass walls and a crisp L shaped plan keep the living spaces open to the trees, while the dark exterior lets the greenery show off a bit.

A concrete base, warm timber deck, and simple stone path give the whole design a grounded and quiet confidence. We shaped it to feel protective without getting bulky, so it settles into the landscape like it has good manners and knows not to interrupt the birds.

Lakeside Ember Shelter

Set right at the water’s edge, this one stretches low and calm with broad rooflines, concrete walls, and wide sliding glass that keeps the lake close at all times. The stone chimney anchors the composition beautifully, while the warm wood soffits stop it from feeling too polished, which modern homes sometimes do a bit too well.

The design was inspired by quiet cabin country and those misty autumn mornings when the shoreline feels half awake. A generous terrace, natural planting, and a simple boardwalk soften the sharp geometry so the house settles into the site instead of sitting on it like it owns the place.

Two low slung wings frame a slim pool and patio, giving the plan a private center that feels calm and a little resorty in the best way. Flat roofs, deep overhangs, and big panes of glass keep the profile crisp, while the warm wood entry softens all that clean geometry.

We pulled the idea from the vineyard rows and dry hills, so the house stretches wide across the site instead of popping up and showing off. Pale stone, dark metal trim, a pergola lounge, and drought friendly planting help it sit easy in the landscape, like it knew the place first.

Snowline Cedar Outlook

This mountain home stretches low across the slope with a long roofline that seems to skim right over the snow. Cedar siding, pale stone, and dark metal trim give it a crisp layered look that feels calm and a little tough, like it packed boots before breakfast.

The sloped roof and sheltered entry were inspired by alpine cabins, but the lines are cleaner and more refined so the whole place stays firmly in the now. Big windows pull in the peaks while the retaining walls anchor the house to the site, which matters a lot when winter decides to be extra.

Monsoon Courtyard Haven

This house leans into its tropical setting with a wide sheltering roof, tall glass walls, and a garden that almost sneaks right indoors. We took cues from resort pavilions and rainy jungle homes to make it feel breezy, open, and a little spoiled in the best way.

Dark stone piers ground the structure, while timber screens soften the facade and give the living spaces privacy without shutting out all that lush green. The stepping pads over the water slow your approach just enough, which is smart design, and honestly a nice excuse to enter like you own the place.

Basalt Lantern Bungalow

This home leans into a crisp low profile, with dark brick wrapping the main volume while a poured concrete frame marks the entry like a calm little stage set. The design feels inspired by prairie horizons and rainy neighborhood evenings, so the roofline stays long and straight while the tall glazing keeps the living spaces tied to the garden.

Wood cladding at the front door softens the cooler exterior, and that contrast matters because it makes arrival feel warm instead of showroom stiff. Concrete planters, native grasses, and the tucked in garage keep the street presence polished but relaxed, which sounds easy, but really is not.

Set low in the grasslands, this home stretches out in two crisp wings linked by a glass passage, a layout inspired by big skies and the calm sprawl of ranch buildings. That long roofline keeps the profile quiet against the hills, while the deep overhangs make the porch feel like the best seat in the county.

Warm wood soffits, slim black posts, and board formed concrete give it a clean edge without turning chilly, which is harder than it looks. Full height glazing pulls the landscape right up to the rooms, and the stepping stone approach slows the arrival just enough so the house gets its little moment.

Engawa Garden Cloister

This single story home wraps around a calm courtyard garden, borrowing from Japanese residential design without feeling stuck in the past. The low rooflines, deep eaves, and long bands of glass keep everything grounded and open, which makes the whole place feel very chill, in a good way.

We leaned into stone paths, clipped pines, and timber screens because they soften the crisp geometry and give each room a quiet garden view. That inward looking layout matters more than people think, since it brings privacy, better airflow, and a little everyday serenity, basically a reset button with a roof.

Saltcliff Terrace Vista Home

Set right into the rocky coast, this single story villa stretches out in clean horizontal planes that feel borrowed from the cliffs around it. Pale stone walls, deep timber roof overhangs, and full height glass keep the form crisp but never cold, which is not easy when your neighbor is basically a mountain.

The long pool traces the edge of the terrace so the house seems to float just above the sea, while broad steps and rough cut paving make the approach feel grounded and relaxed. We shaped the outdoor rooms with cypress, low coastal planting, and a vine covered pergola so the sharp modern lines get a little softness and a bit of Mediterranean charm.

Mistbank Zinc Longhouse

The long low form stretches over the wetland like a quiet pier with a home attached, which is kind of the charm. Inspired by boardwalks and reed lined marsh shelters, it pairs a slim metal roof edge with warm timber lining and full height glazing to keep everything crisp and calm.

Lifting the structure on a concrete base protects it from soggy ground and gives the rooms a clear view across the water, a smart move when the site is more puddle than lawn. The recessed porch adds a sheltered outdoor nook, and the glass railing keeps the outlook wide open so the whole design stays clean and unfussy.

Redrock Rainline Residence

Set low against the canyon, this one leans into the land with a broad roof, deep overhangs, and long bands of glass that keep the view front and center. Board formed concrete at the entry gives it a grounded feel, while the weathered steel panels pick up the same rusty tones as the cliffs, which is a pretty smart move.

The design feels shaped by desert storms and rock strata, so the strong horizontal lines and sheltered outdoor edge make total sense here. A slim pool runs alongside the terrace like a cool little ribbon, and it keeps the whole place from feeling too serious, because modern homes can relax a bit too.

Blossom Arcade Pool House

The plan wraps a slim pool terrace with pale stone walls, warm timber soffits, and big black framed glazing, so every room stays connected to the garden without feeling too exposed. We shaped the low rooflines to stretch calmly across the site, and that deep central passage gives the whole place a neat sense of pause, which is pretty lovely.

It was inspired by old orchard grounds and quiet boutique resorts, so the clipped hedges, espaliered blossoms, and soft stone paving all feel very intentional and a little bit indulgent. The bedroom opening straight to the water adds that easy holiday mood, but the clean geometry keeps it grounded and stops it from getting too fancy for its own good.

Lavafield Turf Refuge

Set low into the lava field, this design feels tucked into the ground rather than dropped on top of it. The dark cladding, basalt masonry, and grass roof were inspired by the rough terrain around it, which is a smart move because a glossy white box here would look a bit lost.

Long rooflines stretch out to frame the mountains, while full height glazing pulls those huge views right into the living spaces. We kept the palette quiet and the forms crisp, so the stone path, reflecting pool, and warm timber entry get their moment too, and yes, that front door knows it looks good.

This low slung desert home borrows from Palm Springs modernism and the rough mountain backdrop, then smooths it all out into something very calm and crisp. The long rooflines stretch wide to shade the glass, which matters out here because nobody wants a living room that feels like a toaster.

Warm wood slat panels, a patterned screen wall, and broad sliders give the facade texture without making it fussy. The lap pool runs beside the house like a cool blue spine, while the gravel garden and chunky cacti keep the whole place grounded and a little bit smug in the best way.

Gumtree Slope Linear Home

Set into the hillside, the house stretches out in one clean line, with a board formed concrete core and dark vertical cladding wrapping the side volumes. That contrast keeps the profile crisp from a distance and gives the arrival a grounded feel, which is useful when the valley view is already showing off.

The design feels inspired by the eucalyptus grove and the long contours of the site, so the glazing runs wide and low to pull the landscape right up to the living spaces. Broad steps, stone retaining walls, and soft bands of lavender make the descent feel relaxed and intentional, not like a hike you forgot to train for.

Fernwater Eaves Court

Set low and wide in a lush garden, this design takes its cues from rainy woodland landscapes and turns them into something calm and sharply modern. The long roof planes stretch out like a good umbrella, which feels very smart when the paving is glossy with rain.

Full height glazing wraps the living spaces around a narrow reflecting pool, so the house feels open without losing that tucked in privacy people actually want. Dark cladding, board formed concrete, and warm timber soffits keep the palette grounded and crisp, while the courtyard tree softens the geometry just enough so it never gets too serious.

Stormgrass Headland House

Set low against the bluff, this coastal home pairs smooth concrete with weathered timber and a dark metal roof that feels crisp without getting fussy. The long horizontal form keeps it tucked into the site, while the recessed entry and narrow clerestory glazing give it a calm, almost squinty look toward the sea.

A winding boardwalk and rough stone garden walls ease the approach through native grasses, so the house feels planted instead of perched there by accident. It was clearly inspired by wild shoreline weather, and that shows up in every sturdy detail, which is nice because the ocean can be a bit rude.

Maple Eave Glassline

A broad roofline stretches low and calm, and the warm wood soffits soften the crisp black framing in a really inviting way. Tall corner glazing and a recessed entry keep the front open and airy while still giving the house a bit of mystery, which is always nice.

The mix of smooth stucco, dark brick, and clean concrete feels inspired by the quiet mood of an autumn street after rain, so it settles in without looking sleepy. A slim carport, low planting beds, and the raised deck continue the long horizontal profile, and the whole place looks like it has excellent taste in coffee.
