25 Modern 2-Story Farmhouses for More Space

Last updated on January 9, 2026 · How we make our designs

Check out our two-story modern farmhouses that break out of the box by adding a second floor to the classic farmhouse layout.

These two story modern farmhouses are our way of blending fresh lines with that “kick off your boots on the porch” feeling.

We kept the forms familiar with gables, dormers and wide porches, then sharpened them up with black roofs, crisp siding, and windows that kind of act like lanterns at night.

We pulled inspiration from working barns, classic rural homes, and a bit of Scandinavian calm, then warmed everything with natural wood, stone touches, and metal roofing that actually likes bad weather.

Notice how the porches, garages, and gables all link together so each home reads as one relaxed whole, not a collection of parts arguing with each other.

As you look through the designs, watch how small details change the personality. A charcoal center, a copper awning, a triple dormer, or a bold window grid can turn “nice farmhouse” into something that really feels like your place, muddy boots, soccer balls, and all.

This design leans into classic farmhouse charm with crisp white board and batten siding and a strong, charcoal standing seam roof that really frames the whole structure. The trio of dormers and that gentle arched window at the center give it a friendly face, like it is actually glad you pulled into the driveway.

We pulled the main porch across the front to make the entry feel generous, then tied it visually into the attached three car garage so everything reads as one calm, balanced home. Black framed windows, clean railing lines and simple stone accents keep it modern and tidy, while the neat landscaping softens the edges so it never feels too formal or fussy.

The tall gables and metal roof give this farmhouse a crisp, modern profile, while the warm wood porch posts keep it feeling like a place where muddy boots are absolutely allowed. Large divided-light windows stack neatly on both floors, which means the interior feels open and the exterior glows like a lantern when evening rolls in.

We designed the charcoal board-and-batten siding to make the natural wood trim pop, almost like the house is wearing its best flannel. A simple stone walkway, low garden lights, and layered plantings frame the front steps and door, guiding guests in and softening the strong lines so the whole place feels inviting instead of fussy.

The tall black metal roof gives the farmhouse a crisp tailored look while those skinny dormer windows keep it from feeling too serious. Warm wood around the front door and garage adds a welcoming vibe so it feels like you can kick off your boots on the porch and stay awhile.

We paired clean white siding with simple trim so the strong roofline and twin chimneys really stand out and feel intentional. The tidy landscaping and curved drive pull everything together and gently guide you in which is exactly what we wanted for a home that looks modern but still feels like it grew out of the countryside.

This design leans on classic farmhouse forms but tightens everything up with sharp black metal roofing and tall modern windows. The stone chimney and warm wood porch beams keep it from feeling too serious, kind of like your favorite boots with a new jacket.

We pulled the main volume forward so the entry feels welcoming, then wrapped flanking wings around it to make the house feel settled on the lawn. Large glass doors and simple vertical siding keep the look clean and unfussy, which is nice because life inside probably won’t be.

This design leans into that clean white board and batten look, then warms it up with natural wood posts and garage doors that feel comfortably familiar. The steep gables and tidy black windows were inspired by classic barns, but here they behave a bit more politely for suburban life.

We played up contrast with dark metal awnings and simple black fixtures, which keeps the whole place from looking too sweet and cottagey. Broad lawn, low shrubs and a straight shot driveway frame the house so the front porch becomes the quiet star of the show.

Those black framed windows punch up the look and keep the proportions feeling tidy, almost like the house dressed up a bit for guests.

We wrapped the porch with chunky stone based columns and simple lanterns that line the entry, which quietly makes everyday arrivals feel a little special. The gentle curve of the front walk, framed by low plantings and soft grasses, nudges visitors toward the front door and adds a relaxed, lived in feel even on a rainy day.

This design leans into simple lines and a calm cream palette, then wakes it up with that rich wood garage door and porch trim that feels almost like well worn furniture. We pulled inspiration from classic barns but gave it slimmer proportions and big vertical windows so it feels bright and quietly confident, not bulky.

The mix of board and batten with horizontal siding breaks up the height and keeps the front from feeling too serious, kind of like rolling up the sleeves on a dress shirt. Deep window frames, the snug front porch and the tucked in side entry all work together to make the house feel welcoming, while the compact footprint keeps it friendly to smaller lots and easy to live with day to day.

We pulled inspiration from classic rural porches and simple Scandinavian lines, then tucked them into a compact footprint that still feels generous. The centered gable, tidy trim work, and that soft blue front door all work together to guide you in gently, like a house that already knows it will photograph really well.

This design leans into a clean Scandinavian inspired farmhouse look, with tall gables and crisp white board and batten siding that keep everything feeling light and simple. The black framed windows and sleek metal roof give it a sharper edge, so it still feels fresh even when the porch is covered in muddy boots and soccer balls.

We tucked in a compact front porch with chunky posts and warm wood door to soften the strong roofline and make the entry feel genuinely welcoming, almost like it is saying come on in already. The single carriage style garage door, tidy brick steps, and sculpted evergreens keep the front elevation balanced and charming, which matters a lot when you want everyday practicality without losing that little spark of curb appeal.

Twin front gables frame the entry and give the house that classic farmhouse outline, but the crisp siding and slim trim keep everything looking fresh rather than fussy.

We tucked generous windows across the front so every main room grabs a view of the lawn, and those little clerestory windows above the porch add character while boosting natural light inside. Window boxes, low stone edging and layered planting beds soften the strong geometry of the facade, which means the whole place feels friendly and homey before you even step onto the first porch step.

Warm wood posts and trim keep it from feeling too polished and they quietly nod to old barns that inspired the design in the first place. Wide black framed windows and double front doors bring strong lines and clear views, which matters when you want the house to feel open, friendly and just a little bit proud of itself.

We pulled the big black framed windows right down toward the floor to keep living spaces visually connected to the pool and garden, which makes even weekday mornings feel a bit like vacation. Wide wood steps stretch across the porch and invite people to drift in and out easily, and the slim plantings along the foundation keep everything soft without stealing the show.

We shaped the front gables to feel a bit storybook, like the kind of place you picture in those daydreams about moving to the country but still having grocery delivery.

Vertical board and batten siding keeps the upper level crisp, while the lap siding below grounds everything and helps the house feel calm and steady. Subtle metal roofing accents, deep black window frames and those tidy window boxes all work together so the whole place looks pulled together without trying too hard, kind of like that friend who is always effortlessly put together.

Warm wood doors and barn sliders soften all the crisp lines, and the tidy front porch with slim railings invites morning coffee, kids, dogs and honestly whoever else wanders up the drive.

The long metal porch roof ties the three car garage to the main entry, which means the front of the home reads as one calm face instead of a lot of separate pieces. Brick at the base gives a solid grounding and those chunky porch piers with their cozy seating corner are there to whisper that evenings really should be spent outside more often.

We paired black framed windows with warm timber brackets and porch posts so it feels polished but still friendly enough that you might actually kick off your boots at the door.

A slim metal awning over the main windows adds just enough contrast and gives that middle bay a little extra importance, like the house is quietly clearing its throat.
